Gymnasts nationwide went upside-down to break world record for simultaneous handstands
INDIANAPOLIS, Sept. 17, 2011 - 20, 478 gymnasts and fans from more than 300 gymnastics clubs nationwide joined together today to break the world record for most handstands performed simultaneously and bring the title back to the United States.
At precisely 1 p.m. ET, 20,478 of participants throughout the country kicked up into a handstand to break the existing record of 2,402, set by Australian gymnasts in Melbourne to promote the 2005 World Gymnastics Championships.
We originally set the record of 1,072, here in Indianapolis, in July 2005 as part of the run-up to the 2005 Visa Championships,? said Steve Penny, president of USA Gymnastics. Bringing the title back to the USA is a great way to celebrate National Gymnastics Day across the U.S. and help build awareness and support for gymnastics.

To celebrate National Gymnastics Day, gymnasts across the country will participate in an attempt to set the world handstand record during the week of Sept. 17, 2011. The handstand world-record attempt is a fun and engaging way to demonstrate the conditioning and physical strength each participant gains through the USA Gymnastics Fitness Program and provide a fundraising opportunity to help the gymnastics community continue to support Children's Miracle Network. A handstand training plan is included as part of the USA Gymnastics Fitness Program.
The USA Gymnastics Fitness Program, formerly part of the Tyson Fitness Challenge, has been revamped to become a year-round fitness program that incorporates gymnastics' basic fundamental movements as conditioning for every student from recreation to team. This program uses gymnastics to help kids become more physically fit while teaching the importance of health and nutrition in a fun and energetic way. Incorporating the fundamentals of fitness - cardiovascular exercise and movement, strength training, flexibility and nutrition - the program is geared toward conditioning youth ages 6 to 16. New materials including advanced exercises and a progression chart have been created to help measure each participant's progress and track success. Cedar Point Gymnastics is committed to this new fitness program and we will promote conditioning and fitness through our gymnastics club. We strive to continue a fun and safe environment where kids can learn healthy lifestyle habits that can last a lifetime.

Every day we pick up the paper and read an article or hear a story on the news about the need to increase fitness opportunities for America's youth. We are constantly reminded of the challenges that our youth face fighting the sedentary lifestyle that is a consequence of computers, video games, TV and other technologies. Together with USA Gymnastics we believe we can be part of the solution.
